How to make your neighbourhood a safer place to be

A safe neighbourhood is the key to safe living, but sometimes this isn’t always the case unless we take control. As with anything in life, there’s good and there’s bad. If you’re wondering what the crime rate is like in your own area, you can type your postcode here and discover top reported crimes.

If you do live in the area with a bad reputation and high levels of criminal offences, there are steps you can take to make your neighbourhood a safer place to be. Community is everything, after all!

Get acquainted with your neighbours

What is your current relationship like with your neighbours? Are you on a ‘nod-when-you-walk-past-each-other’ level, or do you avoid eye contact at all possible costs? Nobody is saying you must become best friends with your neighbours, but it’s certainly worth getting acquainted with them.

It can be quite helpful to be friends with your neighbours. Not only can they keep an eye on your house when you’re not there, but a clear unified front can deter criminals and no-gooders.

Improve the lighting on your street

The best way to stop a criminal in their tracks is to put them under a spotlight! You might consider campaigning for better lighting on your street since evidence suggests that improved street lighting can reduce crime.

Contact your local MP with reasons why you think enhanced lighting is important for your neighbourhood and try and get others to do the same. This is another reason why getting acquainted with your neighbours is handy!

Invest in security measures throughout your street

Do you have a CCTV system installed inside or outside of your property? What about your neighbours? If everyone on your street had a security measure such as this, the safety of your neighbourhood would increase dramatically.

If you’re looking for CCTV installers in Durham or elsewhere across the North East, considering choosing a business with years of experience and who values community – like CDS Security & Fire.

Find or start a Neighbourhood Watch group

Teamwork makes the dream work! If you and your neighbours all wish for a safer neighbourhood, why not consider joining forces and starting a Neighbourhood Watch group? Such a movement encourages better home security measures, strong vigilance, and accurate reporting of suspicious incidents.

It’s easy to apply to set up and run a local scheme, and can be done pretty quickly. It’s also possible that there’s already a local scheme setup near you, so that all you need to do is become a member and join the group closest to you!
