Summer Pipes – How to Get Stronger Sexier Arms

February 2, 2015

(Guns, which way to the beach, pythons…)

Author: Amber French

Having acceptable arms for the summer has become a hot topic since Michelle Obama became the first lady. Here is what you need to know to work with what you’ve got and to get to where you would like to be.

Understanding your muscles and the actual size of each muscle is a pretty big eye opener for most of my clients (did you know that when you do a crunch you are affecting an area of your waist line that is approximately 2-3 inches tall??).  Your arms are similar, the head of your bicep is very small and lifting weights in a bicep curl affect very few muscle fibres. Although we have heard that spot reduction (arms, abs, double chins etc) is not possible, people tend to not fully believe it. You CAN NOT be overweight and sprout a six pack no matter how many crunches you do. So here goes,

Two athletic girls flexing their arm muscles

TIP # 1 Get a great CARDIO routine and do it most days of the week. You can actually hide some pretty well defined muscles under a pretty substantial layer of fat. You need to work out your heart and lungs to help reduce your overall body fat in order to see the muscle definition you are creating. The usual suspects work great here; walking, swimming, yoga, cycling etc.

Tip #2 has to do with opposing muscle groups. Most people work the muscle they see in the mirror. Biceps get worked regularly because we can see them. This tip goes for all muscles; always work the opposing muscle (the push to the pull). In my experience, arm definition has a lot to do with really well defined triceps. This muscle sometimes gets lost under our jiggly under arm fat. Which leads to…

Tip #3 is my secret weapon and such a good visualization for most women! If you are older (read: has saggy skin) or if you have lost a significant amount of weight (read: has saggy skin) you need to fill out NOT shrink your arms to make them look defined!!!  You must work your biceps, (curls) triceps (overhead extensions or bench dips) AND you shoulders (lateral raises) to fill in the skin with muscle (and to be able to carry your own groceries!).  The best way to get rid of your Bye-Bye arm (the skin that keeps waving long after you have said Good Bye) is to build up your bicep which actually pulls the skin up and reduces the amount of hang you have. This leads to tip #4…

Tip 4 is the most controversial…. pick up a weight that weighs more than your purse. Big weights don’t equal big guns. I am not saying 25lbs bicep curls need to be your goal, but anything that doesn’t tire your arms by the end of your first set is wasting time you don’t have to give. Women especially tend to shy away from heavier weights, mix your heavier weight WITH your high repetitions and consistency for the best overall benefits.

Lastly, some of the best arm workouts come from our own body weight. Functional exercises such as plyometrics or yoga tend to use our own weight and everyday movements to define and strength all aspects of your upper body that give fabulous overall definition to your arms. Check out these exercises below.

Downward Dog (add a slight push up to really set those arms on fire)

Tricep Dip (great off a park bench, or stacked yoga blocks)

Plank (engages shoulders, bicep and triceps)

Side Plank (leaving a slight bend in your arm and not locking out your elbow and shoulder, put all theeffort in your arm and set it ablaze!!)

Embrace the tank top and sleeveless and appreciate the work your arms do for you every day!

My Biggest Insecurity – Loose Skin

January 30, 2015

Posted by: Lindsay Hogg

Watching this made my heart melt. I was having one of those days where I was being really hard on myself, especially about my body. This video definitely helps put things in perspective.

What he says is so on point, “you should never let anything stop you from going for your dreams”. He says, his dream is being happy in his own skin and he continues to reach towards that. I think he’s pretty close after this video!

What do you think? Do your insecurities keep you stuck? Are you ready to forgive and embrace them, instead of letting them hold you back? SHARE!

Namaste bitches,

Lindsay

Is your Trainer “The One”

January 27, 2015

Author: Amber French

How to find (and keep) a good personal trainer…

I have had the extremely fortunate opportunity to work with some of the best Fitness Trainers in the country. Some individuals whose passion is to create healthy relationships between people’s insides and their outsides. I have also been fooled by people who I have hired thinking they possessed that passion only to find out that they had no interest in anybody’s work out program but their own. It happens!

Personal Trainer Funny

This article isn’t to convince you to get a trainer or show you how to fly solo in the gym. This article will teach you what to look for in a Personal Trainer (or Fitness Instructor) and if you are fortunate enough to come across one that meets the criteria it is up to you whether you train under their watchful eye or not.

So how do you tell the difference between a fabulous trainer and an unknowledgeable faker that can do more harm than good??? It’s easy….Ask lots of questions.

What are your qualifications?
In my industry you become a “certified” personal trainer through MANY different routes. You can actually be hired by a gym with no experience and go through a training program (consisting mainly of sales techniques) at that gym and start training folks the next day!!! Ideally what you are looking for is an accredited certification that requires the trainer to recert (usually annually or bi-annually) and requires that in that time the trainer takes continuing education credits. This type of certification protects the trainer with adequate insurance coverage should anything unforeseen happen (ask about insurance!!)

runallthemiles

What is your educational background?
This question is a double edge sword. Primarily you are seeing how much training they have and what areas of specialty they may have. A lot of trainers took things in school that have nothing to do with Fitness and Health. That is fine as long as they have more to offer than one certification. Courses in nutrition, special populations, and specific training techniques can round out a trainer nicely. On the other hand do not assume that a university degree makes for a good trainer. Some of the worst trainers I have met have degrees in health and fitness related fields but that doesn’t necessarily mean they understand how to get you effectively (and safely)to your goals. But you have hit the Jack Pot if they have a tons of real life experience, a degree/diploma, multiple certifications (and insurance).

What do you do to stay in shape?
If they don’t walk the walk, run the other way. If they tell you they are fortunate that they don’t really need to work out that much…..report them to the local authorities because they are just collecting a pay cheque.

If they only work out in a gym, they may be more interested in their own physique than yours or have limited resources to pull from. However, if they are avid runners, yogis, cyclists, fitness instructors, triathletes, or a coach (Sports or Health and Wellness) you probably have a well rounded trainer with a broad knowledge of different types of training ideas.

And finally ask them about themselves! Do you have children? What did you do before you worked here? Who long have you been a trainer? Why did you become a trainer? What do you do for fun?
If you can’t stand talking to this person for any reason, you just gave yourself reason 852 why you don’t want to hit the gym that day, and we definitely don’t need any other excuses! Also, being able to relate to their answers will create an easier bond and more trust in their abilities to guide you to your specific goal.

If you think you have found “The One” be open and honest (it’s the only way we can give you the proper advice you need). Never be afraid to request a new trainer, we are professionals and your needs and tastes may change. Don’t do yourself the disservice of not returning to a fantastic (and convenient) gym because you are too shy to break up with your trainer. We can handle it and you deserve the best for your situation.

Be kind and respectful to your trainer and you will see the results you are paying for,

Amber

Yoga: My Favourite Pill

December 17, 2014

Author: Eryl McCaffrey

It’s been a long and winding road to get to where I am today: a happy and healthy yoga teacher and wellness writer. I was told as a young teen that there was something wrong with my brain and the only way to fix it was with medication. This seemed far too easy and short-term for me, even at that age. I knew there would always be the truth hiding behind layers of medication. The truth was and still is that I have all that I need within myself to be happy, peaceful and powerful. I did not have a severe chemical imbalance thankfully, and knew I could heal myself from the inside out. How? I didn’t know that part (yet) but I made a commitment to staying open to new ideas and practices.

I had practiced yoga as a young teen with my dad’s old yoga handbook from the 70’s but didn’t make it a regular part of my life until a few years ago. I came back from a volunteer trip to Costa Rica feeling inspired, yet lost and found my feet at a yoga studio in Oakville called Power Yoga Canada. It was challenging, but I felt alive for the first time in years! All of my pent-up frustration and pain seemingly poured out of my body in sweat and onto my mat for good. It wasn’t long before I became addicted to yoga.  Soon enough, I was healing from the inside out and I could finally pat myself on the back for trusting that I could find a natural way to brighten my mind.

Eryl_McCaffrey

Yoga has been there for me through thick and thin, miles beyond the capabilities of a doctor recommended pill. My mat was by my side ready to catch me through break-ups, deaths, weight gains and losses, career changes, moves, depression and anxiety. When I thought I had nothing to live for, I lived for the promise of that hot room and my moving body.  The rewarding path in life is not the easy one. It’s the one you know you must follow in your heart, but fear to do so. On the true path you’ll want to quit, take the easy way out, give in, give up and hide. You won’t though, because beyond the frustration and suffering is transformation of your mind, body and soul!

Eryl_McCaffrey
You’ll find inner strength, happiness and a deeply deserved sense of peace.

I’m now teaching yoga and writing about health and wellness and I couldn’t be happier! It took some trials and tribulations to get here, but boy am I glad I listened to my intuition. I understand some people have chemical imbalances and require medical treatment, I don’t mean to disprove the fact that some people do require medication. I simply want to share my experience that fighting anxiety and depression through fitness proved to be better than a flimsy Band-Aid of a prescription over my wounds.

Many studies show that exercise has better long term effects on mental health than anti-depressant medication. This Harvard published article, covers a follow up study that showed those who exercised over taking anti-depressants were less likely to relapse into sever depression.

Look deeper, listen to your heart and trust that you already have all that you need inside yourself to feel the way you want to feel and be the way you want to be!

Namaste.

How to Win Happiness – Wellness Retreat Contest

October 30, 2014

Author: Lindsay Hogg

Sponsorship: Yemaya Island Hideaway and Spa, Little Corn Island, Nicaragua

I travel often and no matter where I go, I end up coming home feeling tired, run down and flubby. That’s because when I hear the word ‘vacation’ or ‘holiday’ my mind automatically gives up on all the nutrition and physical work I’ve been doing (sound familiar?). Things like my work out routine and healthy eating habits get thrown out the window. I exchange these good habits for a week or two of stuffing my face, lazing around or stressing out about touring the town and drinking everything in sight.

Although I don’t travel as much as I used to, losing touch with my healthy habits is something I struggle with. I can’t blame the places or people, it’s something I need to work on myself, but It often leaves me wondering if I can really travel much anymore at all. Some trips are better than others depending on the company I keep, but in general I find it really hard to stay mindful and healthy.

So I’ve decided my next vacation will be to find happiness, wellness, fitness and bring home a calm, relaxed mind, body and soul.
