Why Are We Trying To Get Superhero Fit?

June 4, 2018

Superhero movies are now dominating the box office, as they capture the attention of the masses unlike any other genre. Crime-fighting and world-saving super humans represent an ideal version of ourselves: powerful and strong, just like the actors who train so hard to fit the bill. Naturally, people tend to do whatever they can to be like their idols, and the effect isn’t just for vanity.

Exercise is such a crucial part of life, as it affects overall health and well-being. Health Souls previously discussed the importance of setting goals and expectations. And when it’s time to take things a notch higher, working out like a superhero will provide a slew of benefits.

The cool part is that the trend is now inspiring lots of women, too. Female superheroes portrayed on the big screen like Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) influence women to work hard in the gym, changing the definition of what it means to be a sexy and empowered female. Here’s a run down on why women are now so keen with superhero workouts.

Whatever men can do, women can do too

Superheroes are lean, tough, and virtually unbeatable. That’s the kind of confidence brought about by strength, and it’s something which positively affects mindset. Female superheroes are a great source of inspiration for women, who are used to engaging in physical exercise. From being portrayed as damsels in distress who always needed saving to developing awesome characters like Mystique and Supergirl, it’s about time women were represented fairly in the physical department! The times are changing with the introduction of strong female leads who teach everyone that men and women are equals.

Promoting a can-do attitude

A lot of women who learned of Gal Gadot’s training for Wonder Woman were amazed by the rigorous nature of the training routines. Business Insider reported that the star trained for six months straight, and her sessions included fight choreography and horseback riding. She even filmed some of her scenes during the early stages of her pregnancy.

The same goes for the workout routines of other actresses in superhero and action movies, like Jennifer Lawrence for The Hunger Games and X-Men; and Alicia Vikander for Tomb Raider. The hard work they put into their training paid off because they were able to carry out their respective roles really well. If these amazing actresses can do it, then it proves that it isn’t out of reach, you just need to be dedicated.

Media’s role in female empowerment

Of course, social media deserves credit too because it plays a big role in continuing the inspiration started by movies. Fitness personalities like Kayla Itsines, Amanda Bisk, and Cassey Ho continue to promote the idea that women are strong too in their respective fields. Everyday Fitness stresses the importance of having a role model when it comes to hitting your fitness goals. It’s motivating, and a great reminder of what you want to achieve.

This social media trend goes hand in hand with advertising. In fact, sports brands like Under Armour and Nike have launched creative campaigns to debunk the myth that women are weak. Verily Mag discussed the success of the Nike #BetterForIt campaign, which even inspired a YouTube series called Margot vs. Lily. It followed the same narrative of women having a strong mental perspective, which pushed them to achieve their goals in fitness as well as life in general. This type of strategy is being seen across a slew of industries, including gaming, as the medium allows players to imagine themselves as strong female characters. Digital games provider Slingo hosts an array of slot titles that feature strong and powerful women. Black Widow puts the spotlight on the phrase ‘femme fatale’, and shows that ladies can be badass too, much like ScarJo’s portrayal of the Marvel character with the same name. Amazon Queen, meanwhile, showcases a mighty female warrior with a toned physique akin to Gadot’s depiction of Wonder Woman. All of this only goes to prove that women can excel given the chance no matter what industry they are placed in. Becoming superhero fit is a great start and that can lead to empowering yourself on the inside, which is an equally difficult endeavor.

All in all, women should continue to lift each other up, especially now with the abundance of tools for spreading inspiration. Even in something as simple as gym sessions, knowing that there are others who rock the same attitude as you can influence you to be as strong as you can be.

Change Happens in the Details: A Different Bottom Line

April 6, 2016

Author: Debbie Smith

 Going Against the Grain

The first time I heard about Different Bottom Line was through a story about a woman feeling disconnected from her son, while travelling a lot for work. So, she buys him a cell phone so they can text.

Ding, ding, ding! My first judgement pops up… “a 10 year old with a cell phone?” But the boy is not answering any of her texts, judgement #2 – “You want to stay connected to your son by text?” WTF!

Long story short, her son explains openly that he’s not responding because she’s not speaking his language. She should download the app game called ‘Clash of Clans’ and through that app they can message each other.

She was going against the grain and people fear that stuff, I fear that stuff!

My judgements set in because the woman was stepping outside of what I was taught and believed was right. She was going against the grain and people fear that stuff, I fear that stuff! Regardless, I started thinking, this may not have been what I would have done but if it’s working then why the hell not?

Different Bottom Line

Different Bottom Line is about getting a new result based on seeing the situation from a new view; seeing it from a new angle.

How many of us are blocked? What are you seeing from the same old ways? From the same old beliefs you were taught and raised into? Even if they actually don’t apply to you anymore?

We make decisions every day based on our usual ways of thinking and wonder why we circle in the same patterns and land back at square 1.

My Blocks Around Money

We can be a tough nuts to crack when it comes to our past. I grew up having money problems. My parents, parents had money problems and so on. I use to actually say, “I hate money” or “money is the root of all evil” or “money ruins relationships”. It was brought to my attention one day that maybe me dismissing money so much in that language is part of my problem. I got thinking, If I hate money so much, why would the universe conspire to help me get it? Light bulb! I decided it was time to start digging as to why the abundance of money was not entering my life.

Reflecting on My Childhood

I started to remember some of the language that was used around me as a child, about money. I remember seeing my mother be so excited to share with me how she could balance a check book on such little funds. It was the only time I saw her really be so proud of herself, she was magical at it.

I started to see in my own life, that I was feeling the most power and control over money when I didn’t have any!!! I pulled up my boot straps, planned out the week and budgeted it out so we could get by to the next paycheque. I would gloat to myself about how good at it I was just as my mother did. This old way of thinking and acting was not serving me in having money in my life, it was keeping me feeling my best when I was at my worst, when I was broke!

If I hate money so much, why would the universe conspire to help me get it?

Standing in My Power

Now, I put thought and creativity into money instead of fear. I re-affirm over and over that I deserve financial freedom to pay for the things I need and want. I choose to work in the things I love that also make me money. I am up to getting a new result and stomping on my status quo. MY Different Bottom Line is – SHOW ME THE MONAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

Conclusion

If you are reading this, then I know you want certain things in your life, big or small. If the results you are getting keep bringing you back to the beginning no matter how hard you are working, then you are still trying to get there with the same old thought processes, unknowingly!

It’s time to break the patterns and If you can wrap your head around that, then you are ready to create your bottom line… one that is different and one that will actually get you the outcome that you truly desire.

Healthy Brown Bag Lunches For Adults

April 8, 2015

Author: Amber French

Taking your lunch to where you work (even if you work from home) is a great idea regardless of your food choices.  Going to work without being prepared for the day is giving your health and nutrition choices over to someone else. Your someone else could be the vending machine, the leftover birthday cake in the fridge, or your not so healthy co-worker’s lunch.  Even if you are fortunate enough to work from home or work flexible hours throughout the day, it is super important to be prepared ahead of time. That way you can ensure you are eating what you really want (yum) and meeting all your nutritional needs throughout the day.

Brown Bag School Lunch

Most work days start out fresh and new like a new chapter in your gratitude journal!  But then yesterday’s to-dos combined with tomorrow’s deadlines overpower your good intentions and tromp all over the time you had set aside to go to the Juice Bar down the street.  Next thing you know you are making poor life decisions, like asking your cubicle partner if they want to “hang this weekend” after their toe fungus cataloguing class.  All because it is 3pm and you haven’t eaten since breakfast.

Not eating adequately throughout the day can lead to less productivity and increased agitation.  I get some wicked low blood sugar crashes (aka: “Hangry” Face) if I don’t plan ahead.

I am not saying you need to be Martha Stewart or that you need to embrace the left-over, just rotate through a few easy options and pack everything you need the night before (no excuses right?).

Some of the top BBOs (Brown-Bag-Options) for the health conscious are the good old salad, wraps you can assemble at your desk, oatmeal, veggies and hummus, or homemade soup.

Salad: Get a Mason jar, layer your more hearty veggies on the bottom (carrots, celery, etc.) working your way up to your greens. Top it off with your add-ins (think proteins and fats) nuts, seeds, tofu, and dried fruit.  Keep your vinaigrette on the side until you are ready to eat.  Add it, give it a shake, and eat.

Wraps: Pack your wrap contents separate from your wrap.  Load up on left-over beans or rice.  Pack your fresh veggies such as tomatoes, green onions, and avocado, diced and in their own container.  Lime juice and chopped cilantro are all the “dressing” you need to bring your wrap to perfection.  This combo is high in fiber which will keep you full until dinner.

Oatmeal: Lots of options here. You can create overnight oats (no cooking necessary).  Combine oats, almond milk, nuts, and dried fruit the night before. Pack a spoon and go in the morning.  Google it or check out www.ohsheglows.com for full recipes.  You can also cook a batch of steel cut oats, add in almond milk and toppings, and reheat at lunch.  Toppings like cinnamon and nuts can curb those blood sugar swings and leave you feeling full longer.

Veggies and Hummus: My favorite lunch: Hummus and Veggies.  Do I really need to say anymore?  Check out my horseradish hummus recipe here.

Homemade Soup: During the colder months I enjoy busting out the Hello Kitty thermos and filling it with all kinds of homemade soups.  I like to make big batches and then freeze individual servings, which are ready any time. Steaming veggies, adding my favorite herbs and spices, and throwing everything in the blender leaves you with a velvety smooth and warm lunch that can’t be beat.

Don’t turn your nutritional power over to the unknown.  Make lunch something to look forward to and fuel your body and brain all day long.

Happy Lunching,
Amber

What’s Going on in Your Bedroom?

March 31, 2015

Author: Amber French

The space where you lay your head at night can be an important tool in the journey towards living your fullest and best life.  Most of us have more than enough space to hold all of our stuff. But, the thought of turning that space into a place that allow us to decompress and be creative can be over shadowed by those same belongings.

What is your first reaction when you decide to redecorate a room? We usually hit the closest big box store to buy what someone else tells us is going to make us feel at peace and relaxed and “whole” in our bedroom.

What if our first step was to purge or repurpose? Could we find our “master suite oasis” by having less?

Green side table with the decor in the interior

Creating a creative and alive space to lay my head at night has become very important to me. We are directed so often to clean up our diets and our work out routines, even how to brighten up our office space. We are told to get more sleep, yet not much thought goes into what that space consists of.

So much of my life I have laid my head down in a space that encompasses all things I don’t want in my life. I ask my cells to renew and muscles to regenerate, my brain to relax and sort all the sensory information I have taken in that day and the days prior. But the space I am spending 6-8 hours every night is someone else’s image. It can be dark and dramatic or bright and airy, but it was not my design.

It does not reflect who I am or more importantly who I have yet to become.

To be honest, I haven’t put much though into my bedroom, I always felt other rooms deserved any time and attention that I could spare. After all my bedroom was only for me….

There is a ton of advice on how to create the perfect bedroom, but the advice is usually given with the slant that someone may drop by to critique your pad at any time and if you don’t get it just right you may become subject to public humiliation. If your sheets aren’t the exact shade of pale grey to pull out the subtle hint of lavender in your walls “they” will shun you and your family.

What if we chose to surround ourselves with what resonates with us? With what renews and supports our dreams and visions? What if keeping your extra sheets rolled perfectly in a handwoven basket by the foot of the bed makes you want to scream. Or worse what if your bedroom looks no different than your college dorm. You have changed why hasn’t your space?

I intend to reclaim my space and rewrite the rules. So that when I am sleeping all the messages I want to absorb are surrounding me each and every night.

Here are somethings I hope to incorporate into my own bedroom

  • Living things – plants, especially great big tropicals can supply our bedrooms with rich freshoxygen that will aid in all of the crazy biological processes that happen when we sleep.
  • Adopting an open door policy – I won’t be ashamed of my sleeping space anymore.
  • Art work, tapestries and anything that I have created that I thought wasn’t “good enough” to display.
  • Embracing the “alter” – utilizing things that inspire me and keep me focused on creating.
  • Purge – get rid of all things that no longer serve who you want to be. Unburden yourself from the old ways of thinking, freeing up your spirit physically and emotionally.
  • Remove all piles – laundry, old mail, work files and books I “should” read.
  • Replace my pillow regularly.

Most importantly make sure you choose what to bring into your space with your gut and all 5 senses. If you favorite colour isn’t “in” this season, but it feels right choose it! If the sheets you have keep you cozy and feel like a warm hug don’t dismiss them because they may be frayed or mismatched. If you want to open your eyes to art that YOU love or someone you love created for you every morning DO IT.

Create your own loving and purposeful space allowing your body and soul to do what they do best.

Sweet Dreaming,
Amber
