Everyone has anxiety. Yes, there is varying degrees of anxiety, but it affects us all in different ways. Some get anxious in social situations, some get anxious about work or relationships and some get anxious about travel. There are so many factors that cause anxiety, it would take a lifetime to list them all. This article is focused on how to help you calm your anxiety through games, no matter what the cause of it is.
Physical Games
Why do I use the term ‘physical’? Because I’m referring to games that are not on any electronic device (like cards, with an actual deck of cards!). It may sound oldschool to you with everything else available these days, but there are two great reasons why you should try these.
Firstly, these are great travel games. When you’re on a plane or somewhere without wifi, you can always count on small games you fit into your purse or backpack as a good time killer.
Secondly, they are more social. You can play these games with a friend or family member unlike a lot of technology based games, physical games encourage interaction with other people!
Apps
Playing physical games is great for social interaction, but if there’s no one around and you’re having an anxious moment, what can you do? There are tons of free games you can download onto your phone to ease your mind. One of my favorites is Candy Crush because it’s so chill and takes some concentration (but not too much). Try to pick games that aren’t too intense. Remember you want to calm your brain and body, not create more stress.
Online Games
This is where it starts to get a bit hard to choose. There are SO many games online, but you can narrow it down easily through a bit of Googling. Let’s say you wanted to play online bingo, and you found a few sites that look good. Just Google the name of the site to find reviews, like this, “Butlers Bingo Review”. You can take a few minutes to briefly read through reviews and then choose where you want to play. Remember again, this is to help calm anxiety, so stay away from violent or intensive games.
Any of the above games will help with anxiety. It can even help with stress! They focus your attention on the task at hand rather than the anxiety you’re having. This has worked well for me to calm myself down through playing Candy Crush rather than self medicating with food. It better for my body, soul and mind!
